As the eldest child of a single mother my eyes were open to the world from a very young age. I have been a supporter for my mother who struggled with drugs and alcohol for over 9 years. I felt so angry, confused and isolated, struggling to understand how someone I loved so much was doing something that had such a huge impact on myself and my family. I held onto so much pain from how her addiction was impacting my life and the life I wanted for my family. As she went through her journey of recovery I've learnt how I can best support her but also how I can best support myself and make sure I'm able to walk alongside her.
I am able to be empathic, non-judgmental and caring to those who have been in a similar situation as I have walked in their shoes. I use my experience, knowledge and skills to show people that they are not alone and that there is always support. Today I have an amazing relationship with my mother and I'm able to continue to support her in her journey. I hope that I can be a light in the darkness, for you don't have to wander alone.
